This is an umbrella term for using highly aesthetic white filling materials to change the shape and sometimes shade of teeth. These materials consist of composite resin, and when used artistically, give us the flexibility to rebuild your tooth in real time to the point that the filling is invisible.
Bonding can repair chips, re-build worn teeth, close gaps and cover discoloration. It is a great contemporary alternative to veneers, with some limitations. The first is that composite resin will last for 6-8 years, and requires repolishing every year. This is due to the nature of resin-based materials – their porosity means they readily absorb moisture and coloured foods/drinks. The repolishing process re-hardens the top exposed layer. Secondly, the material is tougher to keep clean due to this, and is more likely to chip/fracture than a ceramic equivalent.
Bonding can achieve excellent aesthetic results, however, our profession will likely agree that it will take a rigorous maintenance and home care plan to keep them looking as good as ceramic veneers.
